Reed diffusers and room sprays
Reed diffusers give steady scent without a flame; room and fabric sprays give instant scent on demand. Here is how each works, how to get the most from it, and where the advice comes from.
How a reed diffuser works
Rattan reeds have tiny channels that absorb the fragrance oil from the bottle. The oil travels up the reeds and evaporates from their surface, releasing scent into the room. Harlem Candle Co. explains that the more reeds you use, the stronger the scent, and that a bottle can last from one to six months depending on its size and the room.
Getting the most from a diffuser
- Flip the reeds every week or two to refresh the scent, and do it over a sink or bin so the oil does not drip on furniture.
- Placement: somewhere with gentle air circulation, but not next to an air conditioner, an open window or in a corner.
- Protect wood: the oil can stain, so use a coaster or tray.
- Replace the reeds every couple of months, as they clog over time.
- Refills: many makers sell refill oil; keep the old reeds only if they still draw oil well.
Room sprays
A room spray is fragrance in a water or alcohol base that you spray into the air. Shake the bottle first; Ghost Poppy asks for this on every use. A few sprays into the middle of a room is enough; spray away from your face and from polished or painted surfaces.
Linen and fabric sprays
Sprays labeled for fabric are made for sheets, pillows, towels, curtains and upholstery. Grow Fragrance says its air and fabric spray lasts longest on fabrics, suggests two to three sprays for a bathroom and five to six for a bedroom, and asks customers to test on delicates and never to spray animals. For silk or anything delicate, test a hidden area first.
Aroma oils
Aroma and fragrance oils are concentrated oils for diffusers and burners. Use them only in the device the brand describes on the product page, and never on skin.
