Fragrance layering and longevity

By the StageLook team · Updated · 1 min read

A fragrance lasts longer when it has something to hold on to. Where you apply it, whether your skin is moisturized, and how you store the bottle all matter more than most people expect. These are the habits that help, and the sources behind them.

Apply to pulse points

Pulse points are where blood vessels sit close to the skin and the skin is a little warmer: the wrists, the sides of the neck, behind the ears and the inside of the elbows. Warmth helps a fragrance develop, so these are the classic places to apply it.

Start with moisturized skin

Fragrance evaporates faster from dry skin. Applying an unscented lotion or body oil first, or a scented one in the same family, gives the perfume a base to cling to. Many makers on StageLook sell the same scent as a body wash, lotion or body oil, which is the simplest way to layer: wash, moisturize, then spray.

Do not rub your wrists

Rubbing the wrists together after spraying creates friction and heat that can alter how the scent develops, especially the base notes. Spray or roll, then let it dry on its own.

Layering two scents

If you want to combine fragrances, keep it simple: one lighter scent, such as a mist or a single-note oil, under one fuller perfume, and test the pair on skin before a big day. Discovery sets and roll-on oils are the low-cost way to experiment.

Storage

Heat, cold and strong light break perfume down. Keep bottles in a dark, dry place at a steady room temperature, which usually rules out the bathroom shelf. The original box is good storage.

Spray, oil or solid?

Sprays project further; roll-on oils and solid perfumes sit closer to the skin. None of them is automatically longer-lasting; the formula and your own skin decide. If a scent fades quickly on you, reapplying a small amount later in the day works better than applying more in the morning.
