How to choose hair and beard care
Curly and coily hair
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests washing curly hair less often, conditioning all of the hair rather than only the ends, detangling while wet with fingers or a wide-tooth comb, and applying oil or a leave-in conditioner after washing. Our curly hair guide explains hair types, the LOC method and what sulfate-free means.
Beards
The AAD recommends washing the beard daily with a gentle cleanser, moisturizing right after, and choosing beard oil for normal to dry skin or a lighter conditioner if skin is acne-prone. Balms add light hold; oils condition the hair and the skin beneath. See beard and shaving basics.
What to check
- Ingredients: listed by each brand. Shea butter, argan oil and glycerin are among the ingredients the AAD mentions for curly hair.
- Claims: StageLook does not list products marketed for hair growth, dandruff or scalp conditions, because those are drug claims in the United States.
