How to choose a fragrance

Start with a scent family

The Fragrance Wheel created by Michael Edwards groups scents into four families: floral, amber, woody and fresh. Each product page lists the notes the brand describes, so you can match a new scent to a family you already like. Our fragrance guide explains the families and how top, heart and base notes unfold.

What to compare

  • Format: sprays, alcohol-free roll-on oils and solid perfumes sit differently on skin. Oils and solids are applied to pulse points and are easy to carry.
  • Concentration: labels such as eau de parfum and eau de toilette are not legally defined; the brand decides the label. Check the size and the notes rather than the label alone.
  • Size: many makers sell a sample or travel size. A discovery set is the cheapest way to try several scents before buying a full bottle.
  • Ingredients: the ingredient list on the product page is the brand’s own. “Fragrance” can be listed as a single word because formulas are trade secrets.

Questions people ask

Is a perfume oil stronger than a spray?

Not necessarily. Longevity depends on the formula and your skin, not only the format. Oils are alcohol-free and applied by rolling onto skin; sprays disperse more widely. Try a sample first.

How do I test a fragrance I cannot smell in person?

Order a sample or discovery set, apply it to clean skin at a pulse point and let it develop for a few hours before deciding. Our guide explains why paper and skin smell different.

Are these designer dupes?

No. StageLook does not list imitation designer fragrances. Each scent is the maker’s own composition.
