How to choose skincare

Build a simple routine

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests this order: cleanse, apply any treatment, then moisturizer and sunscreen, then makeup. It also warns that using too many products can irritate skin. StageLook does not sell sunscreen or other over-the-counter drug products, so add a sunscreen from a pharmacy. Our skincare basics guide covers the details.

What to check

  • Skin type: brands describe which skin types a product is made for. That is a description of the product, not a medical claim.
  • Ingredients: hyaluronic acid and glycerin draw in water; oils and butters seal it in. The ingredient list on each page is the brand’s own.
  • Fragrance: fragrance-free means no scent chemicals were added; unscented products may use masking fragrance.
  • Patch test: the AAD recommends testing a new product on a small patch of skin for seven to ten days before using it widely.

Questions people ask

Are these products tested or approved by the FDA?

Cosmetics do not need FDA approval before sale, but brands are responsible for their safety and labeling under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act. StageLook lists products as the brand describes them.

Can a serum treat acne or eczema?

No cosmetic can claim that. Products on StageLook are cosmetics; see a dermatologist for skin conditions.
